Inertia Framework

How to Calculate Your Business Inertia Score

By Sekhar Palanisamy · BStrat India

The Business Inertia Score is a diagnostic tool that identifies which type of inertia is blocking your growth — and how severe it is.

The Business Inertia Score is a structured diagnostic framework that assesses your business across four dimensions: strategy, operations, team, and cash flow. Each dimension is evaluated against a set of indicators that identify whether inertia is present and how severe it is.

The Four Dimensions

Strategy (25 points): Is your business differentiated in the current market? Is your target customer segment clearly defined and actively growing? Do you have a clear view of your competitive position? Is your pricing strategy aligned with your value proposition?

Operations (25 points): Does your business have documented processes for its core functions? Can your team execute to quality standards without founder supervision? Do you have a clear decision-making framework? Can the business handle a 50% increase in volume without structural breakdown?

Team (25 points): Do you have a capable second line of leaders who can make decisions independently? Is accountability clear and consistently enforced? Do you have a functioning performance management system? Is your team growing in capability year over year?

Cash Flow (25 points): Do you have monthly P&L visibility? Do you have 30-60-90 day cash flow forecasts? Are your margins stable and improving? Do you have a working capital management process?

What Your Score Means

A score above 80 indicates a business with strong fundamentals — the focus should be on acceleration and scale. A score of 60–80 indicates moderate inertia — specific interventions in the lowest-scoring dimensions will unlock meaningful growth. A score below 60 indicates significant inertia — structural changes are needed before growth initiatives will stick.
