Why Your Business Stopped Growing After ₹10Cr

By Sekhar Palanisamy · BStrat India

The ₹10Cr plateau is one of the most common in Indian MSMEs. Here's the real reason it happens — and what to do about it.

The ₹10Cr plateau is not a market problem. It's not a competition problem. In the vast majority of cases, it's an internal problem — a combination of structural, leadership, and strategic factors that the founder hasn't yet addressed.

The Structural Explanation

At ₹10Cr, most businesses are operating near the ceiling of what a founder-managed, informally structured organisation can achieve. The business has more customers than the founder can personally serve, more employees than the founder can personally manage, and more operational complexity than the founder can personally oversee. But the systems to handle these things systematically don't yet exist.

The Leadership Gap

Between ₹5Cr and ₹10Cr, the founder is the business's best manager, salesperson, and operator. After ₹10Cr, the founder needs to stop being any of these things and start being a CEO — someone who sets direction, builds capability, and removes obstacles rather than executing directly. This transition is psychologically difficult for most founders. They're giving up the thing they're best at in favour of something they've never done before.

The Strategy Problem

Many businesses that plateau at ₹10Cr are running on a strategy that was designed for a smaller business. Their positioning, pricing, and customer acquisition approach worked for ₹5Cr but isn't suited for ₹25Cr. They need to redefine their market, clarify their differentiation, and sometimes let go of customer relationships that were important at ₹5Cr but aren't aligned with where the business needs to go.

The Diagnostic Question

If your business has plateaued at or around ₹10Cr, the most important question to answer is: what specifically would need to be true for us to reach ₹20Cr? Not "what do we need to sell more of?" — but what structural, leadership, and strategic changes would need to happen? The answer to that question is your roadmap out of the plateau.
